Company history and overview of business

The first steps to create a research and design institute for gas processing in Krasnodar were made in the late 60-ies. Then the Krasnodar Department of Gas Processing Equipment Design (headed by A.A.Stogov) was set up in YuzhNIIgiprogaz (located in Donetsk), which rapidly developed into the Krasnodar branch of YuzhNIIgiprogaz. It was on the basis of this branch that VNIPIgazpererabotka Institute (headed by M.A.Berlin) was founded in January 1972 to the order issued by the Ministry of Gas Industry. By the date of official registration of the Institute, its existing divisions had performed a number of gas processing research and development projects, gas processing facilities and gas pipelines construction and reconstruction projects, and the first large-scale project, namely, the Master Plan for Gas Condensate Field Development in the Krasnodar Region.

The Institute’s history in the field of gas processing comprises many phases:
1969. Design of the first gas processing unit for the Voznesensky Gas Processing Plant was performed. Designing of the first large facility – Belorussian Gas Processing Plant – commenced. The first patents were issued. Machine computation methods were introduced.
1970. Construction of the Institute’s main building began (today, when visiting Krasnodar, one cannot help being impressed by this building).
1971. The State Committee of the USSR Council of Ministers for Science and Technology made a decision to found a new All-Union research and design institute – VNIPIgazpererabotka.
1972. The year of the official foundation of VNIPIgazpererabotka. The Scientific Council began to work. The Institute was transferred to the control of the Ministry of Oil Industry. The institute was assigned the functions of parent enterprises for the gas processing industry.
1973. The first certification of gas processing products was carried out. The first doctoral theses was defended.
1974. The Institute’s collected papers were first published. In view of the rapid progress in the gas industry in the period of major fields development in the Western Siberia, a decision was made to set up the Institute’s branch in Nizhnevartovsk.
The Institute was developing and growing. It designed the largest gas processing plants for the Western Siberia. From the mid-70ies, the Institute was involved in joint projects with western companies.
1976. Joint projects were launched for the construction of three 10 bln m3 gas processing plants with the Fluor (USA), Japan steel works, Ltd (Japan). The Institute invention was first introduced in the Korobkovsky Gas Processing Plant.
1978. In accordance with the order by the Ministry of Oil Industry, the VNIPIgazpererabotka Institute was assigned functions of the head research and development organization in the sphere of gas processing and environmental protection. It developed the “Layout of gas gathering, transportation and treatment facilities and gas processing plants in the oil and gas producing regions of the USSR through 1990”.
1980 . The Institute became the head research and design organization for gathering, transportation and treatment of associated gas.

Construction of the Tengiz gas processing plants and facilities in the Western Siberia. The Institute had gained a footing and had earned prestige (there was a branch in Nizhnevartovsk and a division in Kulsary). During that period, the research and design functions of VNIPIgazpererabotka were had achieved equal progress. One of the strongest research organizations in the USSR, the Institute was working as equal partner with foreign companies. From the 70ies to the late 80ies, VNIPIgazpererabotka’s design was used to build and commission the following giant plants: Belorussian, Nizhnevartovsky, Surgutsky, Lokosovsky, Noyabrsky, Gubkinsky, Krasnoleninsky, Tengizsky, Belozerny, and Muravlenkovsky gas processing plants (with total capacity of more than 42 bln m3 of gas per year), which contributed to the Institute’s further growth and development.

From the early 90ies, the Institute began to use the С Sun Microsystems work stations, which later became the basis for all design work. The Institute earned international prestige that helped it to survive in the 90ies.
1994-1995. The Institute was reorganized into AOOT “NIPIgazpererabotka”. The first meeting of shareholders was held, the board of directors and audit commission set up. The company’s first Charter was approved.
1996. The Institute was renamed into OJSC “NIPIgazpererabotka”. After the crisis, the Institute’s first large project was the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (there was a tender that the Institute won). From 1996, there was further growth of OJSC “NIPIgazpererabotka”. The specialists’ knowledge and expertise, equipment, international prestige of the Institute proved useful and the government estimated the excellent performance of the team at its true value.

The Institute was involved in research and design work within the following well-known international projects:
-1997 - 2001 and 2008 to the present– construction of the pipeline system of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium;
-2000-2003 – gas pipeline “Blue Stream”;
-2008 – Sakhalin-2 project.
Seven approvals were issued by an inspection organization, FGU “Glavgosekspertiza” for the Institute’s facilities since early 2009.
